The island's one full restaurant sits beside the golf course, looking out over Lake Josephine - and it's open to the public, not just Riviera members. It's the island's de facto gathering spot: a place to get a meal and a drink, watch a game, and run into half the people you know.
Two weekly traditions are worth planning around, both open to everyone: Monday trivia and Wednesday bingo, the latter hosted by the American Legion with proceeds going back into the community. There's also an ATM inside - handy on an island with no bank.
Chief's Island Ice Cream.
In the summer months, keep an ear out for Chief's Island Ice Cream truck making its way around the island. It's exactly the kind of small, good thing that makes an island summer - a cone on a warm afternoon, no app required. Routes and timing vary, so it's a happy surprise as much as a plan.
Beyond the Lakeshore.
With the General Store closed, there's no grocery on the island. Bring what you need for your stay, or shop in Steilacoom or Tacoma before you board the ferry.
The Johnson Farm garden market sells fresh produce on summer Saturdays, and pop-up stands appear around the island in season. Watch local channels for what's running.
